Sylvie’s story

Olympic champion at the age of 20. Sylvie Bernier won Canada’s first gold medal in 3-metre springboard during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. To this day, she is the only Olympic champion in this event in the country. She is also the first female Quebecer to win Olympic gold in any sport.

Her involvement in promoting health

Sylvie Bernier has been involved in promoting health through prevention for more than 40 years. Her interest in health began at a young age. Following a diagnosis of allergic asthma, at age 7 she discovered diving. Her pulmonologist recommended that she adopt a physically active lifestyle.

With a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in international health management, she firmly believes in the benefits of creating environments that promote adopting and maintaining good lifestyle habits among the young and not so young. She has served as chair of the Table sur un mode de vie physiquement actif (TMVPA) and the Table québécoise sur la saine alimentation (TQSA) since they were founded.

From 2012 to 2019, she was the healthy lifestyle habits ambassador for Québec en Forme.

Since her return from Los Angeles, she has worked in the media. She took part in covering the Olympics from 1988 to 2016 – 11 Olympic Games. She was a commentator on the show Salut Bonjour for more than 15 years, talking about issues related to the family and health lifestyle habits.

Sylvie has given hundreds of presentations over many years to private companies as well as government agencies. The themes she addresses are the prevention of diseases related to our lifestyle, health and well-being.
